How is Radiant Energy Used ?
Radiant energy is the energy produced by electromagnetic waves. As its name suggests, it is transmitted through radiation and is measured in units of energy such as ergs, joules or kilowatt hours.
Radiant energy has many uses. While it is most commonly used in the fields of solar energy, heating, lighting and radiometry, it is also used in telecommunications.
Electromagnetic waves once absorbed by an object are converted to heat. This is the same effect produced by sunlight as it radiates its energy. However, it should be pointed out that electromagnetic waves can also be reflected. What this means is that the energy they produce can be redistributed or redirected.
This is the principle behind radiant floor heating systems. As the system emits heat from the floor, it is then directed to objects or people with cooler temperature occupying the home instead of heating the air. What happens next is that the people and objects that absorb the radiant heat also radiate back the energy to other objects.
In heating a home or building, a warm element such as a floor (stone, tile or concrete), wall or overhead panel is used to serve as some form of radiator. Materials installed beneath the floor can either be the plastic tubing for the hydronic type of radiant heating system or the electric wires covered with plastic for the electric system.
The plastic tubing is where heated water passes through after being pumped by the boiler. This is normally buried in a series of loops with several fittings.
On the other hand, electric wires are placed in a zigzag manner under the floor and generate radiant heat through the use of electric current. This is easier to install although can be costly in terms of electricity. The cost factor is the reason why the electric radiant heating system is ideal only for use in individual rooms and not in the entire home.
Radiant heat from home heating systems can be generated through electricity or can be taken from the sunlight. Energy from the sun can, in fact, be used in heating water. You may have noticed as well how sunlight can warm a room for long hours especially during hot weather.
There are many great benefits to enjoy from a radiant floor heating system. For one thing, it is energy efficient which can help homeowners save electricity costs. According to the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), homeowners using radiant floor heat systems can set their thermostat 6 to 8 degrees cooler compared to the higher temperature required for convection or forced air heating. Additionally, they dont need humidification due to a constant air moisture content which translates to more savings.
